Batting Order

    Copy Inning

Travel softball lineups: flexible rules, DP/FLEX optional

Travel and select softball — USSSA, USA Softball, and local circuits — gives coaches far more freedom than rec ball. You can bat a continuous order or a set nine, use the DP/FLEX if you want it, substitute on defense freely, and use courtesy runners. The trade-off is that almost none of it is mandated, so lineup strategy is on you.

The Travel Softball builder is built for that freedom: unlimited roster, free substitution in any inning, and copy-an-inning-forward to set a base defense and adjust only what changes. There are no mandatory-play warnings, because most travel formats do not require them.

    Batting order and the DP/FLEX

Travel softball lets you bat a continuous order or a set nine, and optionally use the DP/FLEX — a designated player who hits for a defensive specialist (the FLEX). Whether you use it is a strategy choice, not a requirement. Decide before you build so the batting card matches your plan.

    Free substitution

Defensive substitution is generally free — move any player to any position, any inning. That is what the builder assumes, so you can adjust the field freely without re-entry warnings.

    Courtesy runners

Most travel softball organizations allow courtesy runners for the pitcher and catcher. Eligibility and timing vary by sanctioning body, so confirm the specifics for your circuit.

    Coaching tips

    • Set your base defense on inning one and use Copy Inning forward — change only the positions that move each inning.
    • If you want a bat-first player who does not field, the DP/FLEX is the clean way to do it; if you would rather keep it simple, bat a continuous order instead.
    • Confirm courtesy-runner and re-entry rules for your specific organization at the start of the season.

    Frequently asked questions

Do travel softball teams require equal playing time?

Usually not by rule. Most travel formats leave playing time to the coach. Always confirm with your specific organization.

Do I have to use the DP/FLEX in travel softball?

No. It is optional in travel ball — use it when you want a bat-only player, or skip it and bat a straight order.

This is general guidance for coaches. Playing-time and substitution rules change season to season and vary by local league — always confirm against the current official rulebook before you finalize a lineup.
